Policies & Guidelines
The Career Development Center at Loyola University New Orleans is committed to the rules and regulations governing student recruitment, as outlined by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). Employers utilizing the resources and services provided by the Career Development Center must comply with NACE Principles for Professional Practice, the U.S. Department of Labor, the Americans with Disabilities Act, EEOC regulations, and all local, state, and federal laws. We also require employers to adhere to the Loyola University New Orleans Career Development Center policies listed below.
NACE Principles for Professional Practice
As a member of the National Association of Colleges and Employers, the Loyola University New Orleans Career Development Center adheres to NACE principles and expects both employers and faculty members to do the same.

Additional Policies Regarding Student Recruitment
All on-campus recruiting and the marketing of job and internship opportunities to Loyola students happen through Handshake, Loyola University New Orleans' career management system, and recruiting portal. All positions posted in Handshake will be reviewed by the Career Development Center for content and appropriateness.
The following types of positions will NOT be approved in Handshake:
- Postings indirect moral conflict with Loyola University New Orleans' mission as a Catholic, Jesuit institution.
- Opportunities targeting programs or majors not offered by Loyola University New Orleans. For a full list of our majors and programs, click here.
- Positions with incomplete or unclear job descriptions.
- Internships that do not provide a learning environment and regular supervision.
- Positions targeting alumni that require more than 3 years of work experience.
- Job or internships taking place in a private residence or paid for by an individual (nanny, tutoring).
- Jobs requiring a Juris Doctorate. To recruit Loyola University New Orleans law students and alumni, please click here.
- Job or internships involving the use, production, testing, distribution, or promotion of recreational or medical marijuana.
- Opportunities charging for placement.
The Career Development Center reserves the right to remove any job postings and descriptions without notice or explanation to the employer. Additionally, the Career Development Center reserves the right to decline or disable an employer account at any time and for any reason.
By posting an unpaid internship in Handshake, you agree to the following:
“I understand there are Federal and State guidelines and standards which determine whether interns should be paid at least the minimum wage and overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act for the services that they provide to “for-profit," private-sector employers. For more information, please visit the Federal Department of Labor’s Fact Sheet, and also identify and review the requirements for the applicable Department of Labor for the State. By posting an unpaid internship you attest that you have reviewed the Federal and State guidelines and your organization’s unpaid internship meets the required standard.”
The Career Development Center will not approve babysitting jobs, personal tutors, or positions where a student is required to work out of a private residence (house, apartment, etc.) or is paid by an individual without a formal business license.
The Career Development Center at Loyola University New Orleans works with select third-party employers, doing business as a direct employer or as a contractor with the direct hiring employer, to provide students access to employment opportunities. The Career Development Center does not research nor endorse third-party employers, but sets the recruitment policy below to advise employers through the recruiting process, as well as to protect the students and alumni of Loyola University New Orleans. Through due diligence review of all employers requesting the opportunity to recruit students or alumni either through online resources or in-person events or activities, the Career Development Center ensures to the best of its ability that all participating third-party employers adhere to the policies and procedures of Loyola University New Orleans; the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE); local, state and federal ordinances and laws regarding employment; as well as all ethical and legal recruitment standards and principles. Any third-party employer permitted or invited to participate in recruiting Loyola University New Orleans students or alumni agrees to adhere to the recruitment policy listed below. Any reported breach of these policies and/or agreement will result in ending all contact with the third-party employer, de-activation of all online job recruiting accounts, and termination of all access to recruitment services and activities.
Definition of Third-Party Employer
According to NACE, the National Association of Colleges and Employers, third-party recruiters are agencies, organizations, or individuals recruiting candidates for temporary, part-time, or full-time employment opportunities other than for their own needs. This includes entities that refer or recruit for-profit or not-for-profit organizations, and it includes agencies that collect student information to be disclosed to employers for purposes of recruitment and employment. Examples of third-party employers include:
- Temporary agencies
- Employment agencies
- Contract recruiters
- Search agencies or firms
- Management consultants
- Management consulting companies
- Venture capital firms acting on behalf of their portfolio companies
- Online job posting sites
- Resume referral services
Third-Party Employer Terms and Conditions
Any third-party employer seeking to utilize the recruiting programs or services of the Career Development Center at Loyola University New Orleans must agree to the following:
- No fees will be charged to student or alumni candidate(s) at any time throughout the recruitment or employment process.
- Third-party employers will use Handshake, Loyola University New Orleans' online career management system and recruiting portal, to display, promote and communicate client and employment information to students.
- Before any third-party employer is permitted to advertise any available positions for employment with their client(s), they must disclose client(s) listing(s) to the Career Development Center, as well as clearly make it identifiable on the job description(s) on Handshake. Any third-party employers that do not disclose their client information will not be allowed to recruit Loyola University New Orleans students.
- Third-party employers must clearly identify their organization as a third-party employer. All employment opportunities in Handshake must clearly indicate that the students and/or alumni will be working through a third-party employer.
- As part of its ongoing due diligence review of employers and recruiters, the Career Development Center may request a list of clients from a third-party employer, if the third-party employer is recruiting for more than one client. Due diligence may also include submission of signed retainers from clients, if requested by the Career Development Center of Loyola University New Orleans. Furthermore, the Career Development Center will be granted permission to verify this information by contacting the third-party employer’s client institutions and their employees.
- Third-party employers must only recruit employees for the specifically-stated client or clients they represent and no others.
- Third-party employers will not have access to Handshake to search resumes or identifiable student information except for the sole purpose of recruitment for their client. Furthermore, any student information or resumes collected for recruitment that are not used or for students who are not hired by the client must be destroyed.
- Third-party employers attending any career fairs hosted by the Career Development Center of Loyola University New Orleans will represent employers who have authorized them to recruit on their behalf and will disclose the names of their represented client employers.
- No student information – including resumes or identifiable information - may be collected, shared, sold, or disclosed to any parties by third-party employers except to their specifically stated clients and only and exclusively for the purposes of recruiting employees for said specifically-stated clients, according to the regulations and rights defined by The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA).
- All third-party employers and the clients they represent agree to comply with the Principles for Ethical Professional Practice of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).
- Third-party employers and the clients they represent must adhere to the Fair Labor Standards Act of the U.S. Department of Labor.
- Loyola University New Orleans is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All third-party employers and the clients they represent must adhere to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) Laws and Regulations. Third-party employers and their clients agree not to discriminate on the basis of race, gender, age, religion, national origin, creed, color, sexual preference or orientation, or ability.
Right of Refusal
The Career Development Center reserves the right to deny access and participation to any third-party employer for any reason.
In order for commission-only or commission-based positions to be approved, the compensation arrangement must be clearly noted in the job posting. If the Career Development Center identifies employers with commission-only or commission-based positions that are not clearly disclosing the compensation arrangement in the job description, the employer's recruiting account will be inactivated immediately and the organization will be unable to participate in other recruiting events.
The Career Development Center will not approve job opportunities that require prospective employees to pay a fee or purchase upfront products or services before starting employment.
The Career Development Center at Loyola University New Orleans will only host and support the efforts of those employers who do not discriminate employee candidates on the basis of race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identification, age, special need, or any other basis prohibited by law.
Any employer that conducts employment recruiting by using the resources, staff, or facilities at Loyola University New Orleans must agree to abide by this policy, including conducting interviews with potential candidates in good faith and without questioning said candidates in any of the above-mentioned, protected classifications during the interview process, whether formal or informal. While the Career Development Center recognizes that employers may have certain limitations in their flexibility to accommodate student needs, we request that any hosted employer recruiting activities give ample time for students to consider and decide upon any job or internship opportunities made available to them. Our goal is to achieve a mutually beneficial employment opportunity, both for hosted employers and our students. To achieve this and uphold standards and policies consistent with peer institutions, the Career Development Center’s job offer policy is as follows:
Offers for Summer Internships: November 1 or a minimum of two weeks (whichever is later)
Offers for Fall Campus Recruiting: November 1 or a minimum of two weeks (whichever is later)
Offers for Spring Campus Recruiting: February 20 or a minimum of two weeks (whichever is later)
All official offers must be in writing, electronic or hard copy. The start of the offer timeline is determined by the date on the official written offer.
Any hosted employers of the Career Development Center are expected to report hiring statistics for Loyola University New Orleans students. Please contact us regarding all hiring of Loyola University New Orleans students, regardless of employment resource used.
Loyola University New Orleans' career fair cancellation policy is consistent from career fair to career fair. All career fair cancellations must be completed in writing. In order to be eligible for a refund, employers must cancel their registration no later than 3 weeks prior to the event. Employers canceling their registration by this date will receive a full refund. No refunds will be given to any employers canceling after 3 weeks prior to the event.
